In a society where we are constantly bombarded with different images of beauty each day, it can be easy to succumb to the feeling that who you are in your natural element isn't "enough" or attractive. Magazine articles and television commercials constantly promote that weight loss, clearer skin and other outer features contribute to one's level of worth and attractiveness. Women especially are expected to maintain a certain image AND portray certain characteristics at the same time. Knowing this, some women give in to the pressure of molding themselves into what the media portrays as beautiful and still end up feeling unsatisfied with themselves. Why is that?

Contrary to popular belief, true beauty indeed comes from a person's inner core. This has everything to do with your level of confidence, self esteem and self worth. It has been said that only "ugly" people are told that their personality makes them beautiful but let's take a look at that. What in fact, actually makes a person "ugly?" Incorrect nose size, eye color/shape, ear shape, skin color, hair texture/length??? Is it possible that there is only one set standard for being deemed worthy of being called beautiful? Although there are billions of people living on Earth, somewhere along the line it has been decided that everyone should fall into a particular category in order to be considered remotely attractive. Insecurity and self doubt plague our society because we place such a high value on a certain "look." But that look is only a small smidgen of "looks" that populate the world.

I've personally struggled with insecurity for the past few years and I am just now starting to appreciate/value myself. From my skin color and facial features to the natural texture of my hair, I'm very aware that my "look" isn't the most celebrated or advertised in media. BUT I'm starting to become aware that it doesn't necessarily matter what everyone else thinks of me. I need to be able to look in the mirror in the morning and love what I see. I need to be able to carry that same love with me throughout the day and even when I come back home. Having a true sense of who you are and CHOOSING to be comfortable with it, is something that many people struggle with. Believing that you are beautiful not just because of you outer appearance but because of your inner qualities as well is a journey worth going on. Will there be other attractive people around you? Yes. Will the media continue to spread a blatant lie about what beauty is? Probably. BUT don't let that discourage you from celebrating who you are.

You are beautifully and wonderfully shaped into the very person that you are supposed to be. No one else has your specific blueprint and no one can duplicate who you are. It's time that we start seeing beauty for what it really is. It's not about the superficial aspect that we choose to focus on but instead it is about our inner selves. At the end of the day you want to be proud of being beautiful internally because outer beauty is fleeting and eventually fades. I will leave you with a few inspirational songs that I hope uplift anyone who may feel a little down at times. Remember you are not alone and your journey is not over yet.
